The Drum Corps Discord Server was created on the night of January 23rd, 2017. The moderators from the decided that this great activity deserved a server of its own, along with r/drumcorps itself. We partnered with r/drumcorps thanks to the help of their mod team and a link posted to much success. We gained over 250 members by the end of the DCI 2017 season. Most of the mods at the beginning were also mods from the Marching Band server, which stayed the norm until mid 2018 when we got 2 new long-term mods.
In 2017, we had over 41k messages sent and reached ~270 members on the server in that first year of existence.
To start off the new year with a bang, we received word that we were accepted into the Discord Partners program, which came with a super cool hoodie and our neat vanity link that we still have today (). In March, we finally introduced Corps roles onto the server (don't ask why it took so long, we don't even know) so that members could represent their corps in an easier fashion. In April, we introduced our modified rule set, similar to MBD's, which made our rules list short, simple, and straight to the point. In May, we opened up our instrument section channels for instrument related discussion, as well as brought on two new moderators, TheyCallMeTuba and wut, who are now great full time moderators for our community. In June, we hit the 500 member milestone and started off our 2018 DCI season. Not much else happened in the later half of the year from a server perspective, but SCV won its first DCI title since 1999, so that was pretty cool.
In 2018, we had over 264k messages sent and reached 727 members on the server, a 269% increase over 2017's membership count.
The start of the year didn't have very much happen, but June was a VERY big month for the server. We started out by added three more moderators to our team, wbchristopher and Tea_Pawt, as well brewinbombers, a subreddit mod. We also closed down our meme channel circlejerk rhombusbonanza due to toxicity and rampant personal attacks being thrown, making the server a bad environment to be in. Finally in June, we reached 1k members after having multiple weeks of exponential member growth thanks to the start of the 2019 DCI season. In July, we brought the from MBD over to DCD for the first time. Other than that, nothing else too crazy happened the rest of the year, but the Blue Devils won their 19th World Championship that season in August.
In 2019, we had over 347k messages sent and reached 1,418 members, a 95% increase over 2018's membership count.
We reached Level 2 of Nitro Boosting thanks to our wonderful Corps Boosters helping us out and getting the rest of the server some awesome perks! However, due to COVID-19, the DCI 2020 season was cancelled. In July, we overhauled our role setting system from command-based to reaction-based assignment using bayat-bot. In October, we opened up the #composition channel for those who like to talk about or compose music. In November, the server passed 1 million lifetime messages!
In 2020, we had over 371k messages sent and reached 1,672 members, a 17.9% increase over 2019's membership count.
In 2021, we had over 455k messages sent and reached 2,160 members, a 29.1% increase over 2020's membership count.
We had a drum corps season after last year's cancellation! This helped to bring life back into the server after last year's flatlining. In April/May, we welcomed two new moderators, FighterKit and Multivolt, to the mod team. During the summer months, we net-gained over 200 members, helping us to get past 200 members in mid-September! In November, we created the Vet Verified role so that drum corps vets could have a private place to chat within the server. In December, the mod team released a document outlining how we moderate in an effort to be more transparent with everybody (which can be found ).
